Only 1000 light-years! Black hole closest to Earth discovered by European Southern Observatory

The European Southern Observatory (ESO) announced on May 6, 2020 that it had found evidence of a black hole just 1000 light-years from Earth. The closest black hole ever discovered to Earth.

The research team said the discovery was just the tip of the iceberg, and there may be many similar black holes in the galaxy (the Milky Way galaxy).

This black hole was found in the celestial body "HR 6819" that composes the "telescopium" in the southern sky. The brightness of HR 6819 is 5th magnitude, and if you search in a dark place on a clear night in the Southern Hemisphere, you can observe it without using binoculars or a telescope.

Previously, HR 6819 was thought to be a double binary star consisting of two stars. However, this time, as a result of observation using the ESO's La Sila Observatory in Chile, it became clear that there is a third astronomical object, a black hole, that has not been discovered in HR 6819.

ESO scientist Thomas Rivinius, who led the research, said, "The team originally observed HR 6819 for the study of binaries star. I was very surprised to see that it was a stellar system with a black hole. ”

HR 6819 and LB-1 have only one black hole and no neutron star, but by studying the movement of each of these celestial bodies, It helps to understand how collisions of celestial bodies occur in triple star.
